Post-Operative Tooth Removal Instructions

  • Apply an ice bag to your face over the operated area if needed for the next 48 hours (1/2 hour on, 1/2 hour off). The swelling will peak after 48 hours and then gradually subside.
  • DO NOT SPIT OR RINSE YOUR MOUTH today as this may dislodge the blood clot and interrupt normal healing.
  • DO NOT USE A STRAW for the next 3-5 days.
  • Starting the next day, rinse your mouth with warm saline (1/4 tsp. salt in glass of warm water) after each meal for the next 7 days.
  • Follow your inclination as to diet. If you do not feel like eating, take in fluids: sports drinks, soda, juice, broth, etc.
  • Do not drink or eat anything extremely hot or cold today.
  • The teeth should be given their usual care except for the operated area.
  • Bleeding after the removal of teeth or other oral surgery is normal and may continue for some time. If bleeding is excessive, bite with steady pressure on a small pad of sterile gauze for thirty minutes. If the bleeding does not subside, call for further instructions.
  • For pain, make use of the prescription given to you or take whatever you normally use for a headache.
  • Bony edges: after teeth are removed, the patient may feel hard projections in the mouth and may think they are roots. This is usually the hard bony portion which surrounds the roots of the teeth. They generally break away or work themselves out.
  • DO NOT DRIVE a car or do anything dangerous for 24 hours if IV sedation has been used or while using narcotic pain medications.
  • If you should develop a temperature or pain subsides and then increases again after a few days, contact our office.
  • DO NOT SMOKE for at least 48 hours after surgery.
